Global Caustic Soda Landscape: Shift to Asia and the Era of Green Tech (2025-2030)
Time: 2026-03-19

Summary: With a global capacity of 107.26 million tons, the caustic soda industry is undergoing a structural shift. Wuxi High Mountain analyzes the key trends: North East Asia dominates 56% of the market, while environmental mandates are phasing out mercury and asbestos-diaphragm cells in the West.
In 2025, North East Asia solidified its position as the global hub, accounting for 56% of total capacity. Meanwhile, Europe has seen permanent closures of older units due to high energy costs.
North America: Asbestos-diaphragm units are being replaced. Canada’s last remaining unit is slated for retirement by December 2029.
South America: Approximately 500,000 tons of mercury-cell capacity in Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina are expected to be phased out by 2030 in compliance with the Minamata Convention.
The next wave of capacity will be concentrated in China, India, South East Asia, and the Middle East. Notably, the Middle East is leveraging its low-cost energy advantage to build integrated petrochemical complexes in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
At Wuxi High Mountain, we help our clients navigate these transitions by securing reliable sources from emerging markets and ensuring compliance with global environmental standards.
